Preparing Your Home for Winter
As autumn progresses and the days become shorter, October is a good time to start preparing your home for the colder months ahead.
A little time spent on maintenance now can help keep your home warm, comfortable and running smoothly throughout winter.
Check Your Heating
Before the colder weather arrives, make sure your heating system is working as it should.
Turn your heating on and check that your radiators are warming up properly. If some radiators have cold spots, they may need bleeding.
It’s also worth checking when your boiler was last serviced. Keeping up with regular servicing can help identify potential problems before they become bigger issues.
Look for Draughts
Small gaps around windows and doors can make a noticeable difference to how warm your home feels.
Check around door frames, windows and other areas where cold air might be getting in. Draught excluders, seals and simple repairs can help keep warm air inside and cold air out.
Don’t forget the letterbox and gaps around external doors, which can often be overlooked.
Clear Your Gutters
Autumn leaves can quickly build up in gutters and downpipes.
Clearing them before the wetter winter weather arrives can help prevent blockages and reduce the risk of water overflowing onto walls, windows and surrounding areas.
If your home has a flat roof, balcony or other areas where leaves can collect, these are worth checking too.
Check Your Roof
Winter weather can put additional pressure on your roof, particularly during periods of strong wind and heavy rain.
From ground level, look for any obviously damaged or missing tiles and check whether there are signs of water getting into the loft or upper floors.
If you notice anything concerning, it’s best to have it checked by a qualified professional before winter sets in.
Protect Your Pipes
Cold weather can increase the risk of pipes freezing, particularly in garages, lofts and other unheated areas.
Check that exposed pipes are properly insulated and make sure you know where your home’s stopcock is located should you ever need to turn off the water quickly.
A few minutes of preparation could save a much bigger problem later.
Check Your Windows and Doors
Take a look at your windows and external doors to make sure they close securely.
Check for damaged seals, condensation or signs of draughts, and make any necessary repairs before the temperature drops.
Clean windows can also make a difference as the days become darker, allowing as much natural light as possible into your home.
Don’t Forget the Garden
Your garden needs a little preparation too.
Clear leaves from paths and drains, bring vulnerable plants or pots into sheltered areas and make sure garden furniture is secure before strong winds arrive.
It’s also worth checking outdoor taps and hoses and making sure everything is ready for colder weather.
Check Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Winter is a good reminder to check that your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly.
Test each alarm and replace batteries if needed. If you have any gas, oil or solid-fuel appliances, make sure they are properly maintained and serviced.
Make Your Home Feel Cosy
Preparing for winter isn’t all about maintenance.
As the evenings draw in, small changes can make your home feel warmer and more inviting. Soft lighting, cosy blankets, thicker curtains and seasonal touches can all help create a comfortable atmosphere.
Sometimes it’s the simplest changes that make the biggest difference.
A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way
Winter can bring colder temperatures, heavier rain and stronger winds, but getting your home ready doesn’t have to be a major job.
By taking care of a few simple tasks now, you can head into winter knowing your home is prepared, comfortable and ready for the season ahead.
