Moving House – don’t forget to update your address

When you’re up to your eyeballs in packing boxes, it’s easy to forget to organise the finer details, such as updating everyone who needs to know about the move. So, we’ve put together this handy list for your convenience.

First, set up essential utilities and cover for your new home. This includes informing current and future:

  • Gas, electric and water suppliers
  • Phone and broadband providers
  • Home and contents cover
  • Travel, life, health and pet insurance companies

Next, get your finances in order by contacting:

  • Your bank/building society
  • Credit and debit card companies
  • Any loan, pension or bond providers
  • HMRC and DWP
  • Solicitors, property managers or tenants

Your workplace and/or educational institutions you or your family attend also need to know your new address, so don’t forget to:

  • Inform your employer
  • Update schools and universities
  • Contact the Student Loan Company

Once you’ve moved, contact local healthcare providers, such as a nearby doctor, dentist, and optician (and veterinary clinic if relevant). Let your gym or health club know if you have a membership.

If you own a car, you’ll also need to update the DVLA so they can renew your driving licence and your V5C Vehicle Logbook. Remember to contact your car insurance and breakdown insurance providers, too.

Other companies and services to update/cancel include:

  • TV licensing
  • Subscriptions, clubs and societies
  • Food deliveries
  • Online shopping accounts such as Amazon
  • Cleaning and property maintenance services

Lastly, ask Royal Mail to temporarily redirect your post while you’re organising the switchover.
