Weoley Castle

Weoley Castle is a primarily residential area in south west Birmingham, with a mix of housing, green spaces, and local amenities. Despite its name, it does not have a traditional castle with towers and battlements, but rather the remains of a medieval manor house and associated buildings.

History: Weoley Castle was built in the 13th century, around the 1270s, by the de Weoley family. It was likely intended as a fortified manor house, rather than a military fortress. Weoley Castle began to decline in the 16th century, and by the 17th century, it was largely in ruins. In the 1930s, the site was acquired by the Birmingham City Council. Restoration and preservation efforts were undertaken to protect and showcase the remaining ruins. The site was opened to the public, and it has since become a historical attraction.
