Essential Uni Packing Checklist

Heading off to university this autumn? Whether you’re moving into halls or a shared student house, packing can feel overwhelming – especially if it’s your first time living away from home. Don’t worry – we’ve put together a practical checklist to help make the process stress-free.

Documents & Essentials

Start with the important stuff – you don’t want to arrive and realise you’ve left these behind:

  • Photo ID (passport or driving licence)
  • University acceptance letter
  • Student finance documents
  • Bank card & National Insurance number
  • Copies of prescriptions (if applicable)
  • Council tax exemption letter (your uni can help with this)

Bedroom

Make your space feel like home from day one:

  • Bedding (sheets, duvet, pillows, mattress protector)
  • Clothes hangers
  • Laundry basket/bag
  • Desk lamp
  • Extension leads & chargers
  • Personal touches (photos, cushions, plants)

Kitchen Supplies

Most student kitchens are shared, so label your items if you want to keep them safe!

  • Plates, bowls, mugs, cutlery
  • Frying pan, saucepan, baking tray
  • Sharp knife & chopping board
  • Tea towels & washing-up liquid
  • Reusable water bottle & coffee cup
  • Tupperware (for leftovers and prepped meals)

Bathroom Bits

Whether you’re sharing a bathroom or have your own, these are must-haves:

  • Towels (a couple of each size)
  • Shower caddy for carrying items
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, shampoo, soap, etc.)
  • Flip-flops (essential for shared showers!)
  • Toilet roll (trust us, bring some to start with)

Study Supplies

You’ll likely do a mix of digital and handwritten work, so be prepared:

  • Laptop & charger
  • Notebooks, pens, highlighters
  • USB stick or external hard drive
  • Headphones (noise-cancelling can be a lifesaver)
  • Printer (optional – check your uni’s facilities first)

Cleaning Basics

Yes, you will need these:

  • Multi-surface spray
  • Sponges & cloths
  • Bin bags
  • Washing powder or pods
  • Limescale remover (especially if you’re in hard water areas)

Top Tips

  • Start early: Pack a little each day – don’t leave it all until the night before!
  • Label boxes or bags by room (e.g. kitchen, bedroom) for easy unpacking
  • Don’t overpack: You’ll accumulate things throughout the year
  • Check what’s already provided in halls or student accommodation to avoid doubling up

Heading to university is a big milestone – and being prepared will help ease the transition. From student lettings to local advice, we’re always here to support your next step. Good luck – and enjoy the experience.
