As Bonfire Night approaches, the skies across the UK will soon be lit with fireworks, sparklers, and colourful displays. While it’s a fun and festive occasion, it’s also one that requires a little extra care — especially for families with young children and pets. Here are some essential tips to ensure everyone enjoys the evening safely.
Safety for Families
- Supervise sparklers carefully
Sparklers may look harmless, but they burn at over 1,000°C — hot enough to melt metal. Always supervise children using sparklers, make sure they wear gloves, and have a bucket of water or sand nearby to safely dispose of them. - Keep a safe distance from fireworks
If you’re attending a local display, follow the safety guidelines and stay within designated spectator areas. If hosting fireworks at home, always buy from licensed retailers and set them off well away from spectators, houses, trees, and fences. - Be fire-ready
If you’re lighting a bonfire, keep a bucket of water, sand, or a fire extinguisher on hand. Never use petrol or paraffin to get the fire going, and make sure it’s fully extinguished before leaving it unattended. - Dress appropriately
Opt for close-fitting clothing rather than loose, flowing outfits which could accidentally catch fire. Sturdy shoes are also a must if you’ll be near fireworks or a bonfire. - Plan ahead
If you’re taking little ones, bring ear defenders to protect them from loud bangs, and pack blankets and snacks to keep them comfortable.
Safety for Pets
Bonfire Night can be particularly stressful for animals, who may find the noise and flashing lights overwhelming.
- Keep pets indoors
Even if your pet is usually calm, fireworks can cause unpredictable reactions. Keep dogs and cats inside and ensure doors, windows, and cat flaps are securely closed. - Create a safe space
Set up a quiet, cosy area with their favourite blankets, toys, and perhaps some background noise (like the TV or radio) to mask the sound of fireworks. - Walk dogs earlier
Take your dog out for a long walk before dusk so they can get plenty of exercise and avoid being startled outside. - Stay calm
Animals often pick up on their owner’s emotions. Stay calm, reassure them, and avoid punishing fearful behaviour — comfort is key. - Consider calming aids
If your pet struggles badly with fireworks, speak to your vet about calming products or other professional advice.
