10 MILE CHARITY WALK- TARDEBIGGE TO STOKE PRIOR
On Sunday 21st August we completed our 10-mile charity walk. A group of us met at The Queens Head pub in Stoke Pound (conveniently planned as the start and finish point!) and made our way down the Worcester and Birmingham Canal for a short distance and then headed over the railway line towards Stoke Heath.
We had a lovely view over the windmill at The Avon Croft Museum- which is a fascinating place to visit. The museum is open-air and features over 27 rescued buildings from all over country which have been under threat of demolition and have been since rebuilt there.
From the Avoncroft we headed back towards Stoke Pound and Aston Fields. We crossed a railway bridge and had a view over the new Bromsgrove Railway station at Aston Fields which was reopened on 12th July 2016. It was upgraded to provide longer platforms to accommodate six carriage trains and provide capacity for extra 300,000 passengers per year. It also has larger car parks and a bridge from the concourse with lifts available to all platforms.
From here we headed back across minor roads and footpaths to the canal and went uphill towards Tardebigge. Here you walk along a section of the Tardebigge flight- one the longest flight of locks in the UK featuring 30 locks in a just under 3-mile stretch.
We then headed off and did a loop around Tardebigge church and first school, over some attractive footpaths with views over the Malvern Hills. These took us eventually back to the canal where we finished back at the pub to have a well-earned beverage and Sunday lunch.
You can really see why Bromsgrove and the surrounding villages are such popular places to live. The variety of housing is massive- you will see a gigantic mansion with acres of grounds and then around the corner there will be a modern new development with brand new 2-5 bedroom houses on the site. The new train station is very accessible and much improved and of course you have the M5 and M42 very close by which is ideal for commuters and of course travelling the country for holidays!
We all thoroughly enjoyed the walk and managed to raise another lump sum for the Alzheimer’s Society in the process. A big thank you to all who came along and participated and supported us as ever.
