Brits are ignorant of EPCs
A sizeable minority of British homeowners are unfamiliar with
Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), it has been revealed.
According to figures from building materials retailer Jewson, 36
per cent of respondents to a poll said they had never even heard of
EPCs - the part of a home information pack that details a home's
energy-efficiency.
The survey also uncovered a widespread willingness to adopt green
measures, such as energy-efficient boilers, with 65 per cent of
those surveyed saying they would like to adopt a greener approach
to home improvement.
However, the prohibitive expense of for example, solar heating
systems, is what prevents them from actually investing.
Steve Millward, sustainability and quality director for Jewson,
said: "Our research shows that although people like the idea of
being green - and half are willing to pay up to 20 per cent more on
sustainable solutions - more than 90 per cent don’t
understand how to make energy efficient choices.
"Unless we see a change in mindset, regardless of EPC’s, the
UK will not reach the goals it has set out to achieve in relation
to sustainability and energy efficiency."
